Both Uber and Lyft have similar vehicle and driver requirements, although these vary based on the service offered. Uber and Lyft offer a range of rides for people who want specific features. For example, to qualify for the Uber SUV service or Lyft XL, the driver must own an SUV. Using the basic Uber X and Lyft Original services as a benchmark, there are some notable differences between the two services’ requirements for vehicles and drivers.

Vehicle Requirements for Uber and Lyft

Uber and Lyft aim to limit risk through compliance with the law and keep customers satisfied. As a result, vehicle requirements may differ from state to state or when cars are operated in certain cities. For Lyft, Bloomington cars must be 2015 or newer models. In the rest of Illinois, including Chicago, they must be 2009 models or newer.

Uber’s requirements specify that vehicles used must be 16 years old or newer. In Chicago, however, specific age requirements vary depending on the vehicle make and model and how the driver intends to use it (such as driving for Comfort, Black, etc.).

Both Uber and Lyft specify that four-door cars with seatbelts are a requirement. In some cities and regions, drivers will be asked to have their vehicles inspected by an approved mechanic. This requirement applies in Chicago and Bloomington. On a basic level, both companies expect the cars their drivers use to be registered and in good condition. Salvaged, reconstructed, or rebuilt vehicles are not allowed.

Driver Requirements for Uber and Lyft

Cars are fairly predictable, but people are less so. As a result, both companies have a list of driver requirements and expect people who want to work through their brands to submit to background checks.

Criminal Record Checks

If drivers have committed certain crimes, they may not be allowed to work as Uber or Lyft drivers. Both Lyft and Uber drivers must pass a driver screening, which reviews your driving history and includes a criminal background check. Both companies may disqualify you for certain convictions, such as drug-related offenses or sexual assault. Both companies will also review your driving record and may disqualify you for certain offenses.

Age and Driving Experience

To drive for Lyft, you must meet the age requirements to drive in your city and have a valid driver’s license. For Uber, you must be 25 or older if you signed up to drive after August 12, 2024 (there are exceptions for those who signed up before this date). You must also have at least one year of driving experience in the United States (or three years if you are part of the exception and younger than 25).

Driver’s License and Documentation

To drive for Lyft, you must have a valid driver’s license, valid plates with current registration, and current and valid insurance with the driver’s name on the policy. To drive for Uber, you must have a valid license, proof of residence in the state and city you intend to drive for, proof of insurance if you intend to drive your own vehicle, and you must provide a driver profile photo.

Pursuing Compensation if You Were Involved in an Uber or Lyft Accident

Although both Uber and Lyft operate in compliance with applicable state and local regulations, motor vehicle accidents involving their drivers can and do occur. If you are injured in a collision caused by a rideshare driver who was actively engaged in providing services—such as en route to pick up a passenger or transporting a rider—you may be entitled to pursue compensation through the rideshare company’s insurance policy.

However, if the driver was not logged into the app or was not performing duties on behalf of the company at the time of the incident, any claims for damages would typically fall under the driver’s personal auto insurance coverage. Regardless, a Chicago car accident lawyer can review your case and help you secure compensation.
